Yardbird Southern Table & Bar

Food

Chef Jeff McInnis, John Kunkel, and Chris Romero opened the original Yardbird on Lenox Avenue in 2011, translating farm-country Southern cooking into a Miami Beach dining room and drawing a James Beard nomination and Bon Appétit's Best New Restaurant nod in short order. The kitchen is built around a skillet-fried chicken that is brined and rested for 27 hours before it hits the cast iron — served plain, or as chicken-and-watermelon-and-waffles, which is the room's actual signature. Sibling outposts have since opened in Las Vegas, Singapore, and beyond, but this is the flagship.

What to order
The Chicken 'n' Watermelon 'n' Waffles (bourbon maple, hot sauce, spiced watermelon) is the anchor dish; add the shrimp and grits or the mac-and-cheese. Watermelon Sling cocktail if you are drinking. Weekend brunch runs 10a–3p with bottomless mimosas — reservations essentially required.
