Stop 08 · Lake Okeechobee
Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail
Nature
A 110-mile paved-and-gravel loop on top of the 35-foot Herbert Hoover Dike — one of Florida's few honest long-distance trails, circling the whole lake, part of the Florida National Scenic Trail. Fully reopened January 2023 after the $1.5B dike rebuild. More than half is paved for bikes; the rest is gravel. Best views on the north and east sides. Almost no shade — bring water and pick your season.
- What to order
- Pick your access point by what you want next to it — Torry Island (Belle Glade) for the observation tower + birding, Clewiston for Scotty's Tiki Bar, or Pahokee for the marina and campground. North and east sides have the best lake views. Bring water and sun cover; pick a cool-weather day.
- Hours
- Open year-round, daylight only. Fully reopened January 2023 after the $1.5B dike rebuild. Bring water and sun cover — zero shade on the dike.
